Understanding your skin type

To create a good skin care regimen, you have to know a little bit about your skin type. The following are the primary skin types:

Dry: Your skin remains dry year round. You can see your dry skin peeling off everyday. Your cheeks, forehead and chin feel tight and dehydrated all the time. It is important to regularly moisturize your skin. Dry skin is a breeding ground for bacteria and other germs, which can cause acne. So it is very essential that your regularly cleanse your skin with a cream cleanser and scrub it very gently with a face scrubbing brush*. The brush will remove the upper dead skin and stimulate new skin to come to surface.

Oily: Your skin remains oily year round. It can be more oily in the T-zone (which is your forehead, nose and chin). Oily skin types are very difficult to deal with. The sebaceous glands in the skin secrete more oil than required, which is what causes oily skin. Cleansing your skin with an oil free product will help reduce the oil. Scrubbing your face with a gentle scrub, like the Olay Daily Scrub will help remove the top layers of the skin.

Combination: Most people experience this skin type in the winter. Having this skin type can mean: you have an oily T-zone and dry/normal cheeks. Or it could mean that you have a normal T-zone and oily/dry cheeks. Basically, it is a combination of oily and dry on your entire face. My skin becomes really dry on my cheeks in the winter and is oily in the T-zone, especially on my nose.

Normal: Most people want to achieve normal skin, just like I do! However, skin type is determined by your genes so many of us won't get to experience what having normal skin feels like! Normal skin type means that you are neither oily nor dry; its a perfect balance between the two.

* Face scrubbing brush can be found at: http://www.coastalscents.com/bath-and-body/skin-care/br-700.html. I personally use this brush and it really helps to remove impurities and dirt from your skin. It greatly helps if you struggle with acne like me. Use this brush with a gentle facial cleanser once at night to cleanse your skin.

A little science about skin...

Before I proceed any further, it is important to understand how the skin is made up. The skin is not a single layer of cells like we visualize it. It is made up of various layers. The two primary layers of the skin are:
Epidermis: This is the top layer which acts as a barrier against infections and germs. It is important to keep the top layer of the skin clean, in order to avoid acne and other skin issues.
Dermis: This is the layer directly below the epidermis which serves as a cushion to the rest of our body.

All the impurities and dirt collect on the top layer of the skin. So it is important to regularly clean and scrub the top layer of your skin in order to have a healthy, glowing skin!
